Greg Walker is an honorably retired “Green Beret” and Oregon law enforcement officer.
Mr. Walker began his martial arts journey at Tracey’s Kenpo Karate in San Jose, California, while in junior high school. In 1976, while assigned to the 9th Infantry Division’s reconnaissance company (A-Co, 2/1 INF), he trained with SP4 Tom Downing, a student of Michael D. Echanis, in knife combatives. Greg would again train in H2H with another Echanis instructor while attending SFQC 3-80 at Fort Bragg, North Carolina. Mr. Walker would go on to prepare and instruct both U.S. and foreign military nationals in both H2H and Special Weapons and Tactics for the remainder of his career. Foreign units include the PRAL, the first Salvadoran Army reconnaissance company to have been trained by Special Forces (A-Co, 3/7 SFGA, 1982) and Malaysia’s elite 21 Kommando.
An author and writer, Mr. Walker founded both Fighting Knives and Full Contact magazines. His published Work includes “Battle Blades” and “Training of a Knife Fighter”, as well as “Death from the Shadows – Techniques of Sentry Stalking and Silent Elimination”, a DVD program dedicated to the memory of Michael D. Echanis. Greg is also included in Geoff Todd’s 2005 book “Military Combat Masters of the 20th Century”.
Mr. Walker holds a 4th Degree black belt in Farang Mu Sul and upon training and graduation from the FMS “STK Program” attained the title of SULSA. The FMS STK Program is only for credentialed Military, Law Enforcement, and private sector DoD security personnel. In addition, Greg has trained in multiple martial arts to include Silat, Kali, and ground fighting. He gives all credit to his instructors. Today, Mr. Walker is pursuing his study and training in Qi Gong under Sensei Bill Turner in Sisters, Oregon.
A Life member of the Special Operations, Special Forces, and Disabled American Veterans associations Mr. Walker, himself a wounded warrior, served the U.S. Special Operations Community from 2009-2013 as a DoD trained and certified SOCOM Warrior Care case manager and advocate, working with our most seriously wounded, injured, or made ill Special Operations warriors and their families. His military awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit, the Special Forces Tab, the Combat Infantryman Badge (x2), the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal (x2), and the Meritorious Service Medal (x3).
In late 2003, after his return from his first tour in Iraq, Greg along with his unit was adopted as a Warrior Brothers by the legendary Nez Perce tribe (Pacific Northwest). His Nez Perce name is “Black Scarf”. Mr. Walker considers this privilege and honor to be among the most meaningful in his life to date.
